Cindy Griselda Lecture: Playing with Colors (Zoom)

Cindy Grisdela (https://cindygrisdela.com/)  is an artist, teacher, and author of Artful Improv, Adventures in Improv Quilts, and Freehand Curve Quilts. All three are about creating original quilts without patterns or templates.

She creates abstract designs in fabric focusing on color, shape, and line. The designs are improvisational, a bit like jazz music, where each decision about color and shape influences the next. Putting colors together intuitively, Cindy uses fabric the way a painter might use paint to create graphic compositions that engage the viewer from a distance yet invite a closer look.

Cindy encourages her students to embrace the process of artistic design and let go of the rules to embrace their inner creativity. Her books give clear instructions for building a toolbox of techniques, using color effectively, and adding texture with a variety of stitching motifs. Not following a pattern means not knowing exactly how a design is going to turn out–anything can happen, and that’s exciting!

Cindy’s work has won awards in both quilt venues and art venues and can be found in private collections all over the United States. Cindy has a BFA in Art History from the College and William and Mary and an MBA in Finance from George Washington University. She lives and works in Reston, VA.
